Rocky and I took a walk through Summer Place at Riva Trace in Annapolis, Maryland this morning.  Although it was only 10:30 am the temperature was already in the 80's and the humidity was coming in.  Rocky wanted to walk down to the community pier so we headed off in that direction first.  Then climbed the hill and walked back along Summer Village Drive.  There was a yard sale in progress (too bad I left my wallet at home).  So instead we just stopped and talked to some neighbors along the way.  As we walked I took these photographs in the community.

Evening Comes to Ginger Creek, Riva Trace, Annapolis, Maryland 21401

Last night was one of the first of (hopefully) many warm spring evenings to come to Annapolis, Maryland after a long hard winter.  Rocky and I decided to walk down to Ginger Creek and take some pictures.  We left about 30 minutes before sunset last night (7:33 PM) and stayed until well after dark (about 8:30 PM).  I wish I had thought to take a flashlight.  Walking home on the path from the creek up to the road, although not difficult, would have been easier with a flashlight.

While we were at the the creek, I took a series of about 100 still photographs with my camera.  When I got home I sequenced them into a short (about 1 minute) time lapse video titled Evening Comes to Ginger Creek.  The community pier really is a wonderful place to hang out by day or evening.  Several nights ago at dusk there was a hawk flying by with a fish nearly as big as himself - off to feed the young.  There are often fish jumping from the water.  Last night it was warm, almost no wind, a few high thin clouds and the creek was still.

Community Amenities at Riva Trace, Annapolis, Maryland 21401

If you're looking for community amenities, you'll find several at Riva Trace.  There are tennis courts, basketball courts, walking trails, circuit training path, and community pier.  Access to the tennis courts is control - so you'll need a key from the community association.  The basketball court is open for all to use as is the tot lot playground.

The walk down to the community pier is great anytime of the year.  Although at this time of year it's a little muddy in places (but Rocky doesn't seem to mind).  Early morning is best since there are fewer folks out walking.  While dogs are not supposed to be off-leash in the community, many people let their dogs run to and from the community pier.

Spring is almost here.  Last fall there was a community-wide project to plan along Riva Trace Parkway.  The fruits of community labor are starting to show and will soon be in full bloom.  Already the spring flowers are starting to pop up here and there.  And the flowering trees will soon be in bloom.

Whether you're walking the Parkway - which is about six-tenths of a mile from one end to the other - or strolling though the woods to the pier and back, there's something for everyone.

Each morning Rocky (my lab mix that I adopted from The SPCA of Anne Arundel County nearly five years ago) walk from one end of Riva Trace Parkway to the other and then back.  It was less than one month ago that there was still snow on the ground.  Now, signs of spring are starting show.  Along Riva Trace Parkway, you'll find six neighborhoods with just over 530 homes in all that are considered part of the Riva Trace sub-division.

We start our walk from Winters Chase.  Winters Chase consists of 40-plus townhomes built around 1989.  Most are three bedroom townhomes with basements, garages and fireplaces (although there are some two bedrooms units setup with twin masters).  These townhomes have open floor plans and many have been updated while some have not.  Located on a meandering cul-de-sac, these, the builder set most so that they back to the woods.

There is currently one townhome on the market priced at $349,000 featuring two bedrooms, three full baths, three levels, and one fireplace.  This home had nearly 1,900-plus square feet of living space.  In November 2009 a two bedroom, three bath townhome sold in this neighborhood for $269,200 and was a foreclosure.  Prior to that in September 2009 a three bedroom, three bath end-of-group townhome sold for $367,900.

It's a short walk through the woods to the community pier on Gingerville Creek where Rocky sometimes swims.  There is also a playground, basketball court and tennis courts very nearby.

Downtown Annapolis is only about 15 minutes away.  The community has easy access to Rts. 50 and 97 for commuting to Washington DC, Baltimore, Fort Meade, and the BWI airport.

As evening came on, Rocky and I walked Riva Trace Parkway from one end to the other.

 We walked past Spring Race Court - where the plow had not yet ventured.

Rocky and I stopped at Riva Road.  There were very, very few cars on Riva Road.

 After this, Rocky and I walked back the other way to go in for the night.

The next morning, the sky had cleared.  It was cold - only about 19 degrees at 7:00 a.m. when the sun started to rise.  Below is the entrance monument for Ginger Cove - Annapolis' ideal life-care retirement community.

I thought this picture showed it all ... a great morning dawns ... there's plenty of snow ... I doubt we'll see the sidewalks until mid-March at this point!!!

As I sit here inside and warm, it's still a raging snow storm outside dumping epics amounts of snow on Annapolis, Maryland and the surrounding area.  In the two photos below, you see that I setup a yard stick before the snow began to fall yesterday.  When last measured (Saturday, February 6th at approximately 2:30 p.m.) the snow depth on the patio table exceeded 25 inches.

This is the second storm to hit the area this winter and leave Annapolis, Maryland under a blanket of heavy snow.  It reminds me more of New England than of the mid-Atlantic.  While the last snow storm - before Christmas - set everyone back in their holiday shopping, this pre-Superbowl Sunday storm won't have quite the same effect.  Maryland school kids are likely to be out of snow days before this is cleaned up and they can head back to school.  For the adults - well - we'll see just what's open on Monday.  Most business should be operational after having Sunday to clean out parking lots and clear walk-ways.

I really didn't realized the magnitude of this storm until I walked down to the Rotary, the "One Way" sign (above) barely visible in the blowing snow.

You really can't tell just how bad the roads are.  Rocky has "four paw drive" so he didn't mind walking in the street.  The sidewalks which run down either side of Riva Trace Parkway won't be seen until June of this year, they are under so much snow.

We walked all the way down the street to Riva Road past Summer Place, Riva Trace, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.  I can't wait to look back on this photos when the temperature soars above 90 degrees and the humidity is almost the same.  These will be cool pictures to reflect on!!!

After all the excitement, Rocky was one tired puppy.

In the meantime, while the storm wraps up, we'll just let sleeping dogs lie!!!
