Shake, Rattle and Roll ... Magnitude 3.6 Earthquake Strikes Washington DC Metro Area
According to the U.S. Geological Survey the largest earthquake ever recorded in the metropolitan Washington DC struck the Rockville, Maryland area this morning with a magnitude of 3.6. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center mission is to:
[D]etermine rapidly the location and size of all destructive earthquakes worldwide and to immediately disseminate this information to concerned national and international agencies, scientists, and the general public.
Millions of small earthquakes occur around the globe daily while major earthquakes happen, on average, about once per year. They are measured using the Richter Magnitude scale. It's a measurement that equates the amount of high explosives needed to produce the same amount of energy that is released by an earthquake. The lower the number, the less intense the earthquake, but higher number earthquakes become very intense.
On May 22, 1960 the largest earthquake in the world occurred just south of Concepcion, Chile. It was a magnitude 9.5 and was devastating to the area. I was five years old at the time and lived with my parents in Santiago, Chile, not far from the epicenter of the earthquake. After we all ran to get of the house, I remember watching terrified as the car hip-hopped around on the driveway like a modern low-rider. The front lawn rippled with waves as the ground literally undulated as the quake continued for a terrifying few minutes.
When we think of earthquakes, we usually think of California. But you can experience an earthquake anywhere around the globe, even here in the metropolitan Baltimore-Washington DC area. This morning's quake did wake us up, both Rocky (my lab-Rodesian mixed SPCA rescue) and I went right back to sleep after this mornings 5:04 a.m. wake-up call.
