Once again I found myself walking Rocky (my mixed lab from the Annapolis SPCA) about sunset on the penultimate evening in January 2012 on Thompson Creek off the Chesapeake Bay.  It's been unseasonably warm this year.  I can't wait to find out whether the common saying about March "in like a lion, out like a lamb" will hold true.  In February 2010 there were 34 inches of snow on the ground, but this year the question is how warm will it be and high will the temperature go?

Thompson Creek Reflections, Stevensville, Maryland, 21666

The morning was off to a cool and crisp start.  Whiffs of fog could be seen in the early on the Thompson Creek in Stevensville, Maryland.  Overnight temperatures had dropped into the 40's but as the sun came up, the day started to warm up and it looked quite promising.

Rocky (my Lab-Rhodesian mix) begged for a walk to the public ramp on Thompson Creek.  He enjoys walking there to see what the crabbers and fisherman have left behind for him to find.  He's thinks he's such a sly hunter. 

We got down to the ramp to find that here wasn't much wind and the water was like glass.  I stopped to take the picture above.  The Sea Gull didn't stay long on top of the mooring pole.  I guess we disturbed him.   I'm grateful that I took time to, at Rocky's encouragement, to walk down to the public boat ramp at Thompson Creek.  Mornings on the water in Stevensville, Maryland don't get much better than this!

This Is Why I Live On The Chesapeake Bay In Stevensville Maryland - July 2011

On Monday August 1 2011 the temperature felt like it broke another record only to just barely crest 91 degrees.  By early evening conditions were just right for sever thundershowers.  Bearing down from Baltimore, crossing the Chesapeake Bay, storms approached Stevensville Maryland.  On either side of Thompson Creek storm cells passed with little rain falling between them.  The sun set in the West-northwest sky.  Clouds turned from blue-grey to yellow-orange.  The temperature fell from 90-something to 70-something bringing welcome relief.  It was a spectacular sunset on Thompson Creek in Stevensville Maryland.  Rocky and I lingered on the pier catching the very last rays of the final minutes of sunset.

Fewer boats launched this year probably with gas prices being what they are and economic conditions less than stellar.  Thompson Creek is shallow with 3 feet or so with more to the middle, better for small power boats than deep draft sailboats.  Summer is now more than half over.  The Maryland Blue Crabs have been plentiful this season while the jelly fish have been scarce.  There is still plenty of time to boat, fish and swim along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, from Annapolis Maryland on the Western Shore to Stevensville Maryland on the Eastern Shore.

This is why I live on the water. This is why I call the Chesapeake Bay home. And you can too.

Coastal Flooding On Thompson Creek in Stevensville Maryland 21666

High tide this morning was about 7:13 am.  That and the upcoming Summer Solstice (on June 21, 2011) conspired to submerge the low land around Thompson Creek.  The tide was about 1.78 feet and as a result put the docks under water and breached the rip rap spilling onto the lawn.  It was calm with almost no wind driven ripples in the water.  The morning was bright and cool, around 71 degrees, unseasonably cool and not much humidity.

The weather forecast had included a coastal flood watch the night before.  And, there had been some strong thunderstorms in the late evening and very early morning that came through the area adding to the total rainfall.

Never-the-less it was a great morning to be walking with Rocky.  It was also an irresistible photo opportunity on Thompson Creek in Stevensville Maryland.

George's and Rocky's Big Adventure at Dog Beach Stevensville Maryland

On Friday, Rocky (my Labardor/Ridgeback mix from the SPCA) had a play date with George (a fellow REALTOR's one year old Goldendoodle).  It was time to explore Dog Beach in Stevensville Maryland at the Matapeake Public Beach and Club House.  Located just a little over 3 miles South of the Bay Bridge, Queen Anne's County Parks and Recreation operates an extensive park and beach complex.  While the park and main beach are not pet friendly, they set aside an area where dogs rule and they can run free romping the waters and waves of the Chesapeake Bay.

After a short walk to the North of the Club House along a forested trail, Rocky and George were rewarded with a narrow stip of sandy beach that ran several hundred yards along the Bay.  The waves this day were pretty gentle and there was only a light breeze from the Southwest.  There were plenty of sticks to throw into the water.  George got most of them first.  But there was some good old fashioned tug-of-war over sticks between Rocky and George.

The park complex at Matapeake has a lot to offer.  There's the dog beach where dogs can frolic off-leash but there's also the main beach for people, the club house, the pier and boat ramp.  A $10 daily fee covers use of the facilities including the piers for fishing and crabbing or use of the picnic areas.  If you have a Queen Anne's Public Landings Parking Permit you should be "good to go" for ramp usage (check the Queen Anne's County Parks and Recreation website for updates, landing guide or a ramp permit application).

What's the ultimate payoff for a day at dog beach?  A really good shake!!!  Rocky (caught in a moment of delight shaking off Chesapeake Bay water) loved swimming and chasing sticks with George at the Dog Beach at Matapeake State Park in Stevensville Maryland.  Maybe you'll stop at this park the next time you're looking for a place to take your dog for his or her next big adventure.

Wednesday the temperature broke and soared to nearly 60 degrees.  It came as a welcome relief from the bitter cold we had been experiencing.  The clouds came and went and the day wained.  As it came onto about 5:30 p.m. and I was still working and I almost missed it - a spectacular winter sunset on Sunset Harbour on Thompson Creek in Stevensville, Maryland.  Rocky and I literally ran down the road to the public landing to catch the very best view of the last rays in the final minutes of sunset.  Like I said, we almost missed it.

You can see the path a winter fisherman has broken through the ice after launching his boat from the public ramp.  For the looks of it the boat either went in bow first or the operator ran it in reverse until he reached deeper, ice free water.  There were two crab boats tied to the pier that had been moved in from the moorings out in the harbor.  A house boat and the fire rescue boat or just visible in the far distance.

This is why I live on the water.  This is why I call the Chesapeake Bay home.  And you can too.

Thompson Creek Public Landing - Stevensville, Maryland, 21166

Queen Anne's County Parks and Recreation operates public landings thoughout the county.  One of those landings is at Thompson Creek.  A public landing is a place that you can drive to with your boat in tow and launch and retrieve it from the water.  There is almost always parking for cars and trucks with their trailers.  You'll need a permit to use the ramp which can be purchased at most boat stores and some other locations.  If you are looking to purchase a permit while in Stevensville, the Blue Heron Golf Course (410-643-5721), L & B Marine (410-643-3600) and Western Tire & Auto (410-643-5572) are listed on the Parks and Recreation website as locations where you can purchase a ramp permit for the day or for the year.

Thompson Creek joins Cox Creek and leads to Eastern Bay which in turn opens to the Chesapeake Bay.  You can easily reach many good fishing locations along the Eastern Shore from the Thompson Creek public landing.
